Your return is finished, you have signed the paperwork and the filing is on its way. It feels good to cross that task off the list.
Then another question pops up. When will the refund arrive? Did the payment go through? What if a tax form appears in the mail tomorrow?
There are a few useful things to check after filing. Most are simple, and you don’t need to keep refreshing a website all day to stay on top of them.
Save your final return and confirmation
Keep the final version of your return together with the filing confirmation and important supporting documents. If you signed several drafts during preparation, make sure the saved copy is the one actually filed.
For an electronically filed return, ask your preparer to confirm acceptance. Acceptance means the filing passed the initial electronic checks; it isn’t a promise that the refund has been approved or that the return can never be reviewed. The IRS refund tracker shows separate received, approved and sent stages. You can reach it through our Refund Status Center.
Give your file a clear name and keep it somewhere protected. Your future self will appreciate being able to find it without searching every email attachment.
Check your refund with our Refund Status Center
Visit our Refund Status Center to find the official federal and state refund trackers in one convenient place. Choose the federal refund option, or select your state to find its refund-status tool.
For a current-year federal e-filed return, refund information is generally available within 24 hours. Prior-year electronic filings and paper filings take longer to appear. Have the tax year, filing status, Social Security number or ITIN and exact refund amount shown on your return ready to enter on the official tracker. Our website does not collect that information.
Federal and state refunds are handled separately. One arriving before the other doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong.
Use the official trackers linked from our website. Be cautious about unexpected messages claiming you must pay a fee to release a refund.
Owe tax? Confirm the payment separately
Check the payment method, scheduled date and confirmation number from your filing instructions. If a bank withdrawal was arranged, make sure funds are available and confirm the transaction after its scheduled date.
The IRS Individual Online Account lets you view payment history, pending payments and scheduled payments. Keep your confirmation, and check state payments separately too.
If something hasn’t happened as expected, reach out with the tax year, scheduled date and confirmation details. Don’t send account passwords or full bank information in an ordinary message. We can tell you which records to provide securely.
A late or corrected tax form deserves a review
A brokerage statement or corrected W-2 arriving after you file doesn’t mean you should immediately submit another return. Send the form to your preparer and explain when it arrived.
Changes to income, credits, deductions or other return information may require an amended return. Some errors are corrected by the IRS without an amendment. Reviewing the actual difference helps determine the right response. IRS amendment guidance
Avoid guessing that a small-looking change doesn’t matter. Let us compare it with the filed return first.
Keep any letter that arrives
An IRS notice may explain a change, ask for information or identify an amount due. Read it and note any response deadline. Some letters are informational; others require action. Understanding IRS notices
Upload a clear copy of every page through our secure Client Portal. Include the envelope if it helps establish when you received it. That is more useful than a cropped photo of one dollar amount.
Current clients: you can still get in touch
Filing doesn’t make your questions unwelcome. If you are unsure about an acceptance confirmation, a payment or a document that arrived afterward, contact Kris. Tell us what changed and which tax year is involved.
For Buffalo and Western New York clients, a short follow-up can help turn “I hope everything went through” into a clear next step. Keep the final paperwork, check the important confirmations and then get back to your day.
You don’t have to figure this out alone
You don’t have to second-guess tax calculations, credits or deductions on your own. At Ziggy’s Tax Advantage, we handle the calculations and carefully review the tax benefits you qualify for. Our support continues when follow-up questions arise, so you can feel confident about claiming every dollar you’re entitled to with less stress and worry.
